Meet the Megabite Mates

Meet the Megabite Mates As we get closer to our busy season, we thought the Megabite community might want to learn a little bit about the First Mates that will be guiding customers through reeling in big fish on their next fishing adventure. As great as our Captains are, the experience would not be the same without such amazing first mates. Meet Benny Benny is 21 years old and currently working on pursuing his Captain’s License. Don’t be fooled. Although he may only weigh 100lbs soaking wet, he can still pull the biggest of fish onto the boat. Benny is an excellent fisherman… Read More »

Salmon in the Classroom

Megabite Fishing Charters Salmon Fishing

Salmon in the Classroom Most people don’t realize when they are battling a big king salmon on a Traverse City fishing charter, that it could be a fish introduced to the ecosystem through a 6th grade student somewhere in the state of Michigan. Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources has developed an awesome hands-on program to get students involved in learning the life cycle of a salmon from the egg stage until they are ready to be released in a river. Captain Jared was fortunate enough to actually participate in this program as a 6th grade student and his teacher mom has been… Read More »

Rod and Reel Combinations  Have you ever been on a Traverse City Fishing Charter with Mega Bite and wondered why there are so many rod and reel combinations onboard when only 10-13 get used regularly? Well, these setups all have a specific purpose and each one does actually get used, depending on the time of year and the specific fishing approach that day. Some of the rods get used on a daily basis but others may only get used in the spring vs. later in the summer. We will admit, we do think the boats look better with a plethora… Read More »

Detroit River Walleye Run

Detroit River Walleye Run It is almost that time of year again! Every spring, we load up the boats and trailer them downstate for an insane Detroit River Walleye Run! This is usually a 10-14 day adventure and consists of many limit catches. The spring Walleye migration from Lake Erie, into the Detroit River is the one of the largest migrations of Walleye in the world. These fish are coming into the river for spawning purposes making them very aggressive and often times ready to eat anything put in front of their faces. Walleye love a flow of water when… Read More »

Lifecycle of a King Salmon

Introducing King Salmon to the Great Lakes Have you ever wondered how the non-native King Salmon were introduced to the Great Lakes? Native to the North Pacific Ocean, King Salmon were introduced to the Great Lakes in order to control a substantially high Alewife population. Beaches up and down the coast were covered with dead Alewives, and because King Salmon are such aggressive feeders, they were introduced to control the situation. The Department of Natural Resources implemented a Salmon stocking program called a “hatchery” to essentially farm Salmon for release into our native waters.  A side benefit to the introduction… Read More »

Spring Lake Trout Fishing in Traverse City

Spring Trout Fishing Traverse City

Spring Lake Trout Fishing is the Best! Spring Lake Trout Fishing in Traverse City is just around the corner and we are itching to get the boats back in the water to start chasing fish! This is hands down my favorite time of year to catch these Lake Trout because it takes brains and brawn to reel them in.  Lake Temperatures  In the spring, water temps are often so cold that Lake Trout are up in the shallows in anywhere from 10-50 feet of water. Shallow water lake trout fishing can be an absolute riot. Some may argue that lake… Read More »

Northern Michigan Freshwater Fish are a Delicacy   A charter fishing trip with Mega Bite Traverse City Fishing Charters often results in catching a plethora of fish! Varieties caught include Lake Trout, King Salmon, Coho Salmon and on occasion Ciscoes, Brown Trout, and Freshwater Drum as well. Many of our customers wonder what we do with the non-Salmon fish, particularly Lake Trout they catch.  They have been mislead to believe Northern Michigan Lake Trout and other smaller varieties of fish are greasy and oily. This was once true, but has since changed due the introduction of the… Read More »

Megabite Fishing Charters Fish Identification

Megabite Traverse City Fishing Charters

On a Megabite charter fishing trip in Traverse City, the three most popular catches are Lake Trout, King (Chinnook) Salmon, and Coho Salmon. This is not to say that there are not occasionally other fish caught but these are the three species we target regularly. Lake Trout are the most common catch mostly because they are native to East Grand Traverse Bay so they stay there year round. On cold years, some people even venture out on the ice in the winter to fish for Lake Trout! Salmon are a little different each year and we are patiently awaiting  the… Read More »

2019 Fishing Report

Traverse City: Smallmouth fishing was great in shallow waters of the East Bay. Fish were caught south of Old Mission, from M-37 to the State Park and from Acme to Yuba. A couple cisco were caught around Deepwater Point in 50 feet or less. On the Elk River, bass fishing was good at times using swim baits, crawlers and leeches at the dam and off the rocks. Rock bass and freshwater drum along with lots of carp are also in the river. At the kid’s pond, a few leftover rainbow trout were caught. The West Bay was producing cisco in… Read More »
