TRAVERSE CITY – Mega-Bite came away with the 2017 Salmon Classic championship for the second consecutive year.

The Traverse City boat captained by Adam Collette claimed the top prize of $3,000 and a trophy in the 26th annual event on East Grand Traverse Bay and West Grand Traverse Bay.

Collette’s crew hauled in 235.5 pounds of fish in the two-day event to win by almost 12 pounds.

Showtime XTreme was second at 223.55 pounds on a Traverse City boat led by captain Sam Worden.

Ben Orr and Day Dreamer capped off a Traverse City sweep of the top three spots, bringing in 215.5 pounds.

Team Warrior won the prize for biggest fish, reeling in a 24.65-pound salmon.

“We had a great tournament overall,” tournament director Steve Joslin said. “Most tournaments up and down the lake are down (in entrants).”

The Salmon Classic’s entry numbers were exactly the same in the main event and ladies divisions, while the Sweet 16 category — for boats 16’11” and under — had a record number of entries.

Hoser Down, a Traverse City boat captained by Joel Mills, won the Sweet 16 title with 207.1 pounds and also had the biggest fish in the category at 22.05 pounds.

Day Dreamer won the 333 division title with a three-fish total weight of 62 pounds. The category adds the best three fish over the two days as part of a running series among tournaments in Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana. Mega Bite was second at 58.5 and King Pin, another Traverse City boat led by captain Kevin King, was third at 54.45 pounds.
